THE FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON APPLIED LINGUISTICS (CONAPLIN 5)

The Fifth Conference on Applied Linguistics (CONAPLIN 5) takes "Language Teacher Development in a Globalized World" as its theme.

Background

It goes without saying that we live in a globalized world and that globalization is having a profound effect on education, especially language education. Due to recent developments of technology and communication, there has been an inevitable change on how language teaching is conducted. In the old days, teaching should take place in physical classrooms where chalks and chalkboards were the principal devices. Nowadays, however, teaching can occur virtually anywhere insofar as internet connections are available. Not only that, technological advancements also make it possible for students in non-English-speaking countries to directly communicate with students in English-speaking countries in order to get real, first-hand experiences of using the language.

The emergence of this globalized world comes with it new learning standards for students, teaching standards for teachers and other indicators; all of which are used as vehicles to improvement of language teaching and learning quality. In order to keep abreast with recent changes, language teachers of today have to adequately prepare themselves with the necessary knowledge and skills in content area as well as in teaching methodologies that speak to global challenges.

Purpose

Based on the description above, the conference acknowledges the undoubted effects of globalization on language education and attempts to:
1. address ways in which teachers can better cope with the changes
